Job description

This is a TEMPORARY, INTERMITTENT position in the Bureau of Medical Services (MED). The incumbent serves as an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse Practitioner) required to temporarily fill vacant medical positions at overseas posts or domestically when there are staffing shortages or extended staffing gaps. While overseas, the incumbent assumes the role of primary care provider and is responsible for a full range of primary care, preventative and emergency medical services.

Provides primary and preventive health care services across the lifespan: Obtains patient history, performs physical assessments to include diagnosis and treatment, emergency and other acute care services. Collaborates with local healthcare officials, liaison with local and international experts, evaluates local hospitals, doctors and laboratories for types of services and standards of care, and advises the Ambassador on issues affecting the Mission. Manages health unit personnel and resources. Oversees all medical aspects of the emergency preparedness program which includes counter-terrorism measures and responses to terrorist attacks and incidents involving chemical, nuclear and biological weapons, and natural disasters.
