Job description
Serves as an Electronics Engineer within the Office of Airports, Airports Engineering Division (AAS-100) and is responsible for developing standards, guidelines, specifications and other related criteria for airfield electrical systems incorporating tested and supported applicable industry developments where evidentially feasible, and supporting FAA LOBs/SOs and partners in understanding and pursuing compliance with FAA standards.
The incumbent applies experience and comprehensive knowledge of electronics engineering principles, theories, and concepts as they relate to the development of standards, specifications, criteria, certification and guidelines for airfield electrical systems such as airfield lighting, signage, visual aids, navigational aids and power requirements of supporting equipment, serving as a subject matter expert in these areas. Systems assigned include the latest airport lighting technology, including light emitting diode (LED) technology and other forms of replacement technology for incandescent lighting. Incumbent reviews and analyzes issues related to aircraft enhanced flight vision technology and night vision goggle technology and the associated issues with some of these technologies to see certified LED airfield lighting. Incumbent applies knowledge of specifications of airport lighting equipment and assists with the management of the third-party airport lighting equipment certification program for the FAA Office of Airports. Applies experience and comprehensive knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and concepts applicable to his/her discipline, as well as an understanding of new technologies and methodologies, to solve complex problems and to develop improved technical processes for the organization under the minimal direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader or more experienced engineer. Incumbent coordinates advanced engineering and research projects to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of proposed airport electronic systems; analyzes and evaluates information; sponsors and coordinates research. Incumbent briefs and coordinates with managers, supervisors, contractors, and other people/groups involved with airport lighting, to resolve issues and provide detailed recommendations. Incumbent defines and develops standards, criteria, requirements, and related system/program elements; evaluates validity of program assumptions; correlates technical conclusions, prepares, and submits recommendations for change. Monitors the dissemination and implementation of approved changes. Incumbent develops and writes guidance in the form of FAA Advisory Circulars and Engineering Briefs to be used by consultant engineers, airport operators, airport maintenance personnel, and equipment manufacturers. Incumbent acts as the representative of FAA Airports and technical point of contact in interactions with other FAA organizations, other government agencies, and aviation industry interest groups. Incumbent serves on International committees representing the FAA for airfield lighting. Serves as a responsible technical spokesperson between the FAA and industry stakeholder coalitions within their area of expertise. Communicates to all levels internally (within and across LOBs/SOs) and externally. Makes presentations at technical conferences and authors technical guidance and briefings as lead author and presenter. Provides support and assistance in the preparation of technical evaluations, business plan goals related to their expertise, status reports, and other documentation with industry consideration and Technical Center input where applicable. Acts as a principal technical subject matter expert, and team leader for relevant activities as appropriate. Contacts are internal and external. Coordinates significant technical matters with representatives of external organizations. Often represents FAA as a senior technical point of contact on initiatives, programs and other work activities. Communicates feedback and results to all levels internally (within an LOB/SO or across LOB's/SO's) and externally. Drafts, reviews, and edits summary reports or other documented findings in the form of Engineering Briefs, Advisory Circulars, technical summaries, presentations and other resources and guidance publications.
