License Pharmacist (Pharmacy Supervisor)

The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for the daily professional and administrative/personnel management of the Inpatient Pharmacy section. The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible to ensure that timely, safe, efficacious, appropriate, and cost-effective drug therapy is provided with a minimum risk to the FHCC patient. Drug dispensing, drug information, and drug therapy monitoring are included in this program.

FUNCTIONS OR SCOPE OF PRACTICE: The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor will be involved in the independent practice of pharmacy. In consult with the Associate Chief, Pharmacy Operations and Chief of Pharmacy, the Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for the professional and administrative management of the Inpatient Pharmacy personnel and programs in accordance with the guidance set forth in the Pharmacy Department policies and procedures, VA/DoW regulations, and state and Federal laws governing the practice of pharmacy. The incumbent will be under the administrative supervision of the Associate Chief, Pharmacy Operations. Clinical: Provides consultant and administrative support to the Pharmacy and Therapeutic Agents Review Committee (P& T). Assures that assigned staff participates in the FHCC's Adverse Drug Reaction Program and in identifying and reporting adverse drug reactions occurring in both inpatients and outpatients. Ensures ongoing Inpatient Pharmacy staff participation in performance improvement in order to fulfill The Joint Commission, or equivalent, requirements. Coordinates service-specific Medication Usage Evaluation (MUE) activities through the respective committees upon request. Education: Identifies and makes provision for the developmental and training needs of pharmacists and technicians. Assures coordination and development of in-service training programs for staff pharmacists, technicians, and other pharmacy staff in order to maintain licensure and/or expand the capabilities of these individuals to efficiently function in an environment involving direct patient care, drug therapy monitoring, and other clinical pharmacy services. As needed, the incumbent will consult with specialists on training needs and decide upon training programs related to clinical involvement. Works cooperatively with the medical, dental, nursing, and research staff to explore, organize, and implement interdisciplinary programs which will enhance education, training, and clinical involvement. Serves as faculty member and clinical consultant at affiliated universities, which involves planning, supervising, and implementing graduate, undergraduate, residency, and internship learning experiences offered in cooperation with any institution affiliated with the FHCC in accordance with the standards established by the Department of Veterans Affairs and Department of the Navy. The incumbent will work closely with the affiliated colleges of pharmacy and their respective staffs to analyze, forecast, and develop areas in which VA/DoW can be more closely affiliated and didactically support the educational and training needs required by these institutions to train highly qualified health professionals. Administrative/Supervisory: The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for the personnel management and supervision of the pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and other support personnel assigned to the Inpatient Pharmacy in their daily performance of all clinical, distributive, and informational functions. The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for ensuring that all work assignments of the Inpatient Pharmacy staff are completed in a timely manner by distributing the workload, tracking the status and progress of work assignments, maintaining records of work accomplishments, and preparing reports as needed. The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor functions as a communication link between pharmacy management and staff to ensure all FHCC policies and Pharmacy Department policies and procedures are met while providing comprehensive and responsible clinical services. The Inpatient Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for the following functions in this regard: Supports the FHCC's and Pharmacy Department philosophies, goals, and objectives, and communicates them to employees within Pharmacy Department. Prepares and/or reviews written employee performance evaluations and makes recommendations for appointments, incentive awards, promotions, and advancements for achievement of performance through FHCC policies and Human Resources (HR) guidelines. Conducts or recommends employee counseling and disciplinary actions as necessary in accordance with FHCC policies and procedures. Interviews employee candidates and advises on initiating or terminating the employment process in counsel with the Chief of Pharmacy and the Associate Chief of Pharmacy Operations.
