Job description

Medical Instrument Technicians perform diagnostic examinations or medical treatment procedures as part of the diagnosis and treatment of patients. Position requires knowledge of capabilities and operating characteristics of one or more instruments and knowledge of human anatomy and physiology. Position requires a practical understanding of medical data generated by patient/equipment connections. Position may require a practical knowledge of chemistry, pharmacology, physics, and mathematics.

Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional This position is in the Operating Room (OR) Surgical Service Line at Gulf Coast Veterans Health Care System (GCVHCS) VA Medical Center (VAMC). Duties are performed primarily in the OR and Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) and may include but are not limited to: Maintenance, sterilization and operation of equipment such as anesthesia machines, anesthesia carts, difficult intubation carts, bronchoscopes, Glide Scopes, infusion pumps, cell savers, warming devices, blood warmers, ultrasounds, and others are a daily requirement. Assists the professional staff with the transport of critically ill patients to and from the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting, the operation of OR, ICU, and transport monitors, as well as the safe transport of patients with invasive lines. Responds to emergency requests from anesthesia providers and obtain and deliver blood products from the laboratory to the OR, including appropriate documentation. Responsible for the setup of equipment and supplies needed to start each anesthetic case as well as the decontamination of reusable supplies and equipment at the conclusion of each case. Responsible for working with designated supply management staff to monitor and order adequate inventories of necessary anesthesia supplies and medications, as well as rotating dated stocks. Checking for medication and equipment outdated in all OR's is completed monthly. Responsible for assisting daily with the positioning of patients under the direction of an anesthesia provider. Performs routine maintenance on and identify any problems with equipment. Then notify the appropriate staff of any issue, effect repairs if possible, or refer the problem to bioengineering when necessary. Responsible for keeping anesthesia workspaces and work room orderly and tidy to promote workflow and easy access to vitally important patient care materials.
