Job description

The position is located at the VA Loma Linda Medical Center (VALLMC). The primary purpose of the Safety and Occupational Health Specialist is to perform the tasks to create a safe environment for our employees to work in. This position ensures employees are working in a safe workplace that meets all regulatory guidelines. This announcement may be used to fill future vacancies.

Major duties include, but are not limited to the following: Plans and prepares supplements, guidelines, and written procedures to implement technical safety standards, codes, and safety requirements for a variety of operations and activities for the different departments in the medical center, clinics, veteran's homes, CBOCs, and community nursing homes. Inspects construction projects to determine compliance with occupational standards; and is responsible for design review for new areas that are being built or renovated. Administers and rolls out safety products such as the electronic Safety Data Sheet Management systems. Provides corrective actions through safety training, instructions, and interpretations through written reports. Schedules and performs opening and closing conferences with contract nursing home administrators, safety directors, and other top management. Participates in the planning and operation of all safety campaigns, disaster preparedness drills, and presentations and plays an active role in informing all participants on safe working practices. Uses appropriate VA NFPA or Joint Commission code, analyzes blueprints of proposed construction projects and makes sure fire/safety recommendations suggesting design changes or corrections of plans for fire/safety deficiencies and fire protection systems. Plans, organizes, administers, and records all aspects of the Comprehensive Environment of Care Program (CEOC), for VA Loma Linda (VALL) Medical Facility, Community-Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), Specialty Clinics, Business Centers, and Warehouses. Advises senior level management officials within the surveyed area, of the identification of EOC deficiencies, and recommends changes, via Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), in the design of work to meet TJC, VHA, and VALL standards and polices. Schedules and manages the weekly recording of all EOC compliance, as it relates to patient care activities, capturing deficiency data in real-time, and generating time-sensitive corrective action plans, to mitigate existing patient safety risks and EOC deficiencies. Monitors and reports monthly, all EOC compliance metrics and measures to the VALL Medical Center Director, VAMC Leadership levels, and to the Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN).
